SCARCE MID to LATE 19TH CENTURY AME RI CAN FOLK ART ANTIQUE TIN TOLEWARE 24 in LENGTH, HAND PAINTED BOX/DOMED TRUNK, with FLORAL MOTIF, featuring ROSES & MORNING G L O R Y F L O W E R S, D O M E L I D & WIRE PULL, with INTACT FRONT LATCH CLASP & REDRESSED RED ENAMEL PAINTED INTERIOR. [Trunk appears to have possibly been enhanced with later hand painted stenciling & retouching of the original period painted graphic iconography]. Mid to late 19th century Ame ri can antique tin toleware hand decorated trunks & boxes. 24″ Length x 12″ Depth x 12 1/2 Height. For sale is this outstanding, albeit redressed at some previous point, mid to late 19th century Ame ri can antique tin toleware, black lacquered with hand painted floral motif and meandering floral border and different width’s of line, small dome top trunk or chest. The trunk was at some point either enhanced to’in-paint’ and fill-in lost enamel paint and possibly stencil over some painted surfaces which had since diminished since its inception. The spirit of the stenciled decoration, rose and morning glory floral motif are however, consistent with the period in which other similarly decorated toleware tin boxes, trunks and small chests were made. The interior of the chest is clearly redressed with a wonderful Chinese red enamel or lacquered finish. This most likely wouldn’t have been original (at least in this unblemished state) to the trunk’s original decoration but reflects the red of the exterior of the chest found principally in the petals of the blooming roses and the surrounding rose buds. The Morning Glory flowers are rendered in green stencil, with wispy, leafy, meandering vines. It still has its front lid clasp and the rear hinges of the dome top trunk cover are still intact and functioning. As pretty as a peach. It’s ready to go and hold whatever your heart’s desire.
