Early to mid 19th century Ame ri can folk art antique New England primitive hand decorated, painted Japanned tin toleware boxes. 4 3/4 ” Height x 6 1/2 ” full Height (including wire lid pull). 8 ” Width x 4 1/4 ” Depth. Weight: 15.4 oz. A simply extraordinary, estate fresh, early to mid 19th century Ame ri can folk art, New England primitive, hand decorated tin toleware dome top box. All original, first generation enamel paint over a Japanned, black lacquered surface. The front lid clasp is intact, as well as the rear wire hinges. The tin wire lid pull is also intact, unbroken and without any distortions. Absolutely untouched and unaltered. Now 155 to 185 years old and counting. A truly marvelous early Ame ri can tin toleware, hand painted, lidded box. This early tin toleware box features a hand painted, repeating swag motif, popular in the early to mid 19th century Ame ri can Empire period. It only suffers from some fairly minor enamel paint loss on its decorated lid. There’s been no subsequent in-painting or second generation re-painting of the tin toleware box and it remains, nearly as it was originally constituted. Found in north-central Massachusetts, along with two other early tin toleware hand painted boxes, in an early, finely appointed estate along the Massachusetts/New Hampshire state line in a center chimney cape on an early, rural farm.
